Dodge County commissioners met in a called meeting on Thursday, July 10 at 1:00 p.m. to set a proposed millage rate and discuss the purchase of new ambulances.After some discussion where the commissioners blame a budget deficit on the operating expenses of the new jail for having to raise the millage rate, they set a proposed millage rate of 12.064. That is a two (2) mill increase over last year’ rate of 10.064. Commissioner Brian Watkins noted that where the jail’s operating expenses are concerned, the commissioners have no control over those expenses.
Because of the proposed increase, the commissioners will have to hold three (3) public meetings. The first two meetings will be held on Wednesday, July 23. One will be held at 11:00 a.m. and the second at 6:00 p.m. on the same day. The third public meeting will be held on Wednesday, July 30 at 6:00 p.m. These meetings will be held at the County Administrative Building.
When the total digest of taxable property is prepared, Georgia law requires that a rollback millage rate must be computed that will produce the same total revenue on the current year’s digest that the last year’s millage rate would have produced had no reassessments of property occurred.
