A Dodge County man and his girlfriend were sentenced to life in prison recently in Dodge Superior Court for the death of the man’s three year old son in March of 2014.David Edward Smith, age 31, pleaded guilty to second degree felony murder and second degree child cruelty. His girlfriend, Kaiko N. Smith, age 31, pleaded guilty to first degree felony murder and first degree child cruelty.
According to officials, the child, Zackory Dean Smith-Chick, died last March of what was described as extensive “inflicted trauma” over a period of about two weeks. On Friday, March 14, 2014, a call was placed to the Dodge/Wilcox 911 center about a child that was injured. When emergency medical personnel arrived at a mobile home at 27 Arthur Cooper Road just outside Eastman, they found that Zackory Dean Smith had severe injuries and called for the Dodge County Sheriff’s Department. After sheriff’s deputies arrived, they called for assistance from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI).
